Tra teoria e pratica: la didattica del design nella Scuola di Cole, nel Bauhaus e nella HfG

The task of Universities is the educating minds to con- tribute to society’s cultural development. In recent times, however, in Italy we are experiencing a gap between what is studied at University and what happens in the business world. To demonstrate how education (and also research) must be linked to the business world, I will highlight the work of three institutions that have marked fundamental milestones in design history: the Government School of London, founded by Henry Cole in the nineteenth centu- ry, the Bauhaus and the Hochschule für Gestaltung of Ulm. The result is a close and foreseeing link between ed- ucation, experimentation and the business world in these excellence institutions; making possible important experi- ences that underlie design. In a nutshell, in design studies, deep entwinement between theory and practice is not merely a necessity but the essence of design itself.

Il compito delle Università è la formazione dell’intellet- tuale per contribuire allo sviluppo culturale della società. Negli ultimi tempi, però, si assiste in Italia a uno scolla- mento tra quel che si studia nelle Università e quanto accade nel mondo del lavoro. Per dimostrare come la didattica (e la ricerca) debba essere legata al mondo pro- duttivo si esima l’attività di tre istituti che hanno segnato tappe fondamentali nella storia del design: la Government School di Londra, fondata da Henry Cole nell’Ottocento, il Bauhaus e la Hochschule für Gestaltung di Ulm. Il risul- tato è che il rapporto tra didattica, sperimentazione e mon- do produttivo, in questi luoghi di eccellenza, è sempre sta- to stretto rendendo possibili esperienze importanti che stanno alla base del design. In breve, nei corsi di studi in design, la compenetrazione di teoria e pratica si rivela non soltanto una necessità ma l’essenza stessa della disciplina.
