Abstract

The article discusses some architectural features of the shopping center intended as a basic layout on which disciplinary reflection can draw new directions of intervention, throughout a genealogical approach, namely focusing on the plan. The open space pattern, ideal of a plan totally free from any partition walls, has been acquired over the last thirty years of the twentieth century by the Radical architects. Their Neutral supersurfaces referred to the supermarket, promoting it as a synthesis of spatiality at large, so to warn by evocating a dystopian universe in which every social meaning would be expressed through the production and sale of merchandises. This scheme consisting in an internal space only dotted by the exhibitors of goods has imposed itself for its flexibility and affordability and has been transposed to other facilities, such as the museum or other where services are combined with cultural entertainment and with shopping. The advent of digital logistics, however, pushes that initial scheme to the limit, combining the free layout of the commercial building with some elements that could be defined as pre-logistics or para-logistic that have already been clearly present since the end of the 19th century. Exiting the short circuit imposed by the Modern Movement, the plan shuns all purity and be back not only to embody the place where to embed the transfer of the static load to the ground, but a palimpsest of codes where to develop a multiplicity of actions which are diversified by temporality, subjects and recipients. By modifying the disciplinary and heuristic statute that embodies, the plan find itself becoming an assembled artifact originating from the indications related to the objects and the robots that move them to automatically reach, iteratively, a single objective: to move goods quickly in the total absence of friction.
