There are projects that come about like a custom dress sewn upon the body, designed not as simple shells, but as complex, autonomous objects with their own form and meaning. The magazine Sicilia was one such project. It both encompassed and expressed its namesake island—or, as some locals say, regardless of how it’s labeled in any atlas, continent—while at the same time aspiring to be an international, visionary, experimental publication. This contradiction shaped each issue, whereby everything or almost everything was transformed—to flip the phrase uttered by the prince in Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous novel The Leopard—in ever new, unusual ways, such that, inexorably, everything or almost everything changed.
Ci sono progetti che nascono come abiti cuciti addosso a un corpo, disegnati non come semplici involucri, ma come oggetti complessi e autonomi, dotati di forma e significato. Un abito come la rivista «Sicilia» avvolge ed esprime l’isola di cui porta il nome o, a dispetto della lealtà degli atlanti, il continente, e al contempo ambisce a essere internazionale, oltreché visionaria e sperimentale. Un’antinomia che si ripropone in ogni numero, dove tutto o quasi si trasforma, a contraddire l’espressione del principe di Salina, in modo sempre nuovo e insolito, affinché tutto o quasi inesorabilmente cambi.
