Appunti sulla fortuna di Seneca nel "Grand siècle"

La ampia circolazione delle opere di Seneca può essere spiegata soltanto a partire dal notevole successo di cui godette la sua produzione filosofica e teatrale nell’arco dell’intero sedicesimo secolo, benché, in realtà, esso affondi le sue radici fin dal quattordicesimo secolo. Tale successo raggiunse il culmine all’interno della cultura francese del Grand siècle. Nel diciassettesimo secolo il latino delle sue pièces è previsto nei curricula degli studenti delle Università, mentre le versioni francesi di queste tragedie continuavano a godere di un grande successo. Partendo da queste premesse, il saggio prende in esame l’influsso del pensiero, dell’opera, dello stile, della poetica e dei personaggi di Seneca sull’intera produzione letteraria del secolo. Ma lo scrittore latino costituì inoltre un punto di riferimento centrale all’interno dell’aspro dibattito accesosi nel periodo della crisi della coscienza europea quale antodoto indispensabile, in virtù della sua intrinseca modernità, contro la tirannia. Il dibattito fu infiammato non saltanto in ambito teatrale, bensì, in senso più largo, dall’insieme delle idee circolanti all’interno della vasta Querelle des anciens et des modernes. L’eterna validità del messaggio di Seneca continua ad essere attiva, nell’ambito della storia delle idee e delle poetiche sugli intellettuali dei secoli successivi. The widespread diffusion of Seneca’s work can only be explained by starting from the notable success, which his philosophical and theatrical work enjoyed throughout the entire period of the sixteenth century, even if it had already started in the fourteenth century. This success reached his apex in the French culture of the Grand siècle. In the seventeenth century the Latin of Seneca’s pièces appeared in the curricula of scholars at university colleges but the French versions of these tragedies were also widespread throughout the whole century. Starting from this premise, this paper will examine the huge influence of the thought, work, style, poetry and character of Seneca on the literary output of the century. Notwithstanding that this Latin writer became embroiled in the intricacies of a bitter debate, Seneca’s poetry ended up, in a crisis of conscience, as an indispensable antidote to tyranny by virtue of its modern nature. This debate had been inflamed not only by theatrical matters but also by more wide-ranging considerations, such as those constituted by the Querelle des anciens et des modernes. The eternal validity of Seneca’s message will continue to be an exemplary reference point, also in developing the history of ideas and the poetry of the intellectuals from subsequent centuries.
