Legno e Architettura Contemporanea. Ragioni e modi dell’utilizzo del legno nel progetto di architettura.

The thesis will deal with the question concerning the current architectural production in wood that has been and still is the subject of continuous theoretical insights. The first publications on the subject can be found in the Casabella architecture magazine already in the year 2000 signed by Alberto Ferlenga and later by Marco Biagi. Both authors will re-address the problem in 2009, 2013 and 2016 trying to answer the questions inherent in the contemporary production of wooden architectures in which in most cases we find ourselves a general disconnect between the construction industry and architectural design. The actuality of the news, the urgency and the spirit of the times requires an in-depth reflection on some ways of interpreting the use of wood through the echoing of words that see strongly remove the motivations of the use of this natural and epic material; it is the overuse of the word sustainability, which has triggered in the wood-building industry an accelerator that sees producing a performing building and as Ferlenga says «suspended between attempts at linguistic and expressive revision in which wood is assumed in itself for the camouflage setting of the building in the landscape and as a shortcut for consensus ». The research of this doctoral thesis tries to give an answer to the problem by addressing the theme on two levels. The first, purely theoretical - in which starting from a historical basis necessary to resume some questions on wood in architecture - will address and highlight the questions posed by Ferlenga and Biagi, through a study of the wooden architectural production of the last twenty years , which tries to problematize the use of wood construction. So we analyze about sixty architectures - filing them - transcending the different solutions formulated, but gathering them in relation to the general questions that they pose and raise about the reasons and the ways of a conscious use of wood. The second is the realization of an architectural project, a project in the city, which necessarily leads to tackle the unresolved issues tackled in the first part from the point of view of the use of wood, trying to find a solution. Why a wooden urban architecture project? Through the sixty architectural examples proposed as geography of design approaches and good practices on the use of the material, it emerged that most of the architecture is confronted with a natural context, and few are the cases in which a consolidated urban context, in which the fragility or firmness of the urban reality can mean in the project to ask more questions about the way and the reasons to design with a different material from that of our urban realities. In this key of interpretation comes an argument about the experimentation of a wooden project in the city, and in particular in Palermo. The interest in wood in architecture is a trend in constant growth, which, in architectural literature, has manifested itself over the last few years in various areas of events, publishing projects and research that are increasingly oriented towards the analysis of the characters and the potential and language of this resource. In this logic, the research focuses on this building material, structural and finishing for its valences not only ecological and performance, but framing a logical construction of its use in architecture.

La tesi tratterà la questione attinente la produzione architettonica attuale in legno che è stata ed è tutt’oggi oggetto di continui approfondimenti teorici. Le prime pubblicazioni sul tema le ritroviamo nella rivista di architettura Casabella già nell’anno 2000 a firma di Alberto Ferlenga e successivamente da Marco Biagi. Tutti e due gli autori riaffronteranno il problema nel 2009, nel 2013 e nel 2016 cercando di dare una risposta alle questioni insite nella produzione contemporanea di architetture in legno in cui nella maggior parte dei casi si ritrova un generale scollamento tra industria delle costruzioni e progettazione architettonica. L’attualità della cronaca, l’urgenza e lo spirito dei tempi impone un’approfondita riflessione su alcuni modi di interpretare l’uso del legno attraverso l’echeggiare di parole che vedono allontanare fortemente le motivazioni dell’uso di questo materiale naturale ed epico; a farne da padrone è l’uso eccessivo della parola sostenibilità, che ha innescato nell’industria delle costruzioni del legno un acceleratore che vede produrre un’edilizia performante e come dice Ferlenga «sospesa tra tentativi di revisione linguistica ed espressiva in cui il legno è assunto in sé per l’ambientamento mimetico dell’edificio nel paesaggio e come scorciatoia per il consenso». La ricerca di questa tesi di dottorato tenta di dare una risposta al problema affrontando la tematica su due piani. Il primo, puramente teorico - in cui partendo da una base storica necessaria per riprendere alcune questioni sul legno in architettura - affronterà e metterà in evidenza le domande poste da Ferlenga e da Biagi, attraverso uno studio della produzione architettonica in legno degli ultimi vent’anni, che si cimenta nel tentativo di problematizzare il ricorso alla costruzione in legno. Si analizzano così circa sessanta architetture - schedandole - trascendendo le diverse soluzioni formulate, ma cogliendole in relazione agli interrogativi di carattere generale che esse si pongono e sollevano riguardo le ragioni e i modi di un utilizzo consapevole del legno. Il secondo è la realizzazione di un progetto architettonico, un progetto nella città, che porta necessariamente ad affrontare dal punto di vista del ricorso al legno le questioni irrisolte affrontate nella prima parte, tentando di dare una soluzione. Perché un progetto di architettura urbana in legno? Attraverso i sessanta esempi architettonici proposti come geografia di approcci progettuali e di buone pratiche sul modo dell’utilizzo del materiale, è emerso che la maggior parte delle architetture si confronta con un contesto naturale, e pochi sono invece i casi in cui ci si cimenta in un contesto urbano consolidato, in cui la fragilità o la fermezza della realtà urbana può significare nel progetto porsi più domande in merito anche al modo e alle ragioni di progettare con un materiale differente da quello delle nostre realtà urbane. In questa chiave di lettura nasce un ragionamento circa la sperimentazione di un progetto in legno in città, ed in particolare a Palermo. L’interesse per il legno in architettura è una tendenza in costante crescita, che, nella letteratura architettonica, si è manifestata nel corso degli ultimi anni in vari ambiti di manifestazioni, progetti editoriali e ricerche che sempre più spesso sono orientate all’analisi dei caratteri e delle potenzialità e del linguaggio di questa risorsa. In questa logica la ricerca rivolge l’attenzione a questo materiale edilizio, strutturale e di finitura per le sue valenze non solo ecologiche e prestazionali, ma inquadrando in una costruzione logica del suo uso in architettura.
