THE EFIAN PROJECT FOR ANCIENT NOTO, HISTORICAL INQUIRY AND DIGITAL REPRODUCTION: WHEN MUTUAL NEEDS COME TOGETHER-The "Experimental Fruition Ingenious Ancient Noto" (EFIAN) Project, cofinanced by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research as part of the funds allocated to the promotion of start-ups, is the latest initiative launched to study, safeguard and promote the archaeological site of Ancient Noto which was destroyed and abandoned after the earthquake of 1693 which devastated south-eastern Sicily. The aim of the EFIAN Project, started in 2014 and completed in October 2016, was to consolidate the potential of ancient Noto to draw visitors within the framework of cultural tourism, through a multimedia experience that can be enjoyed both at the museum in Noto, which hosts the collections, and directly on site through the possibility to make the reality of the places interact with the digital reconstructions of their state as they are believed they were before 11 January 1693 with adequate technological media. The historiographical investigations and the processing of the digital models were carried out by the research team of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo which already boasts a consolidated experience of collaboration in the fields of the history of architecture and design.
