A field of research not yet investigated in all its potential, within the very rich literature about the Trajan’s Column, is an in-depth study of the iconographic schemes of Greek derivation poured into the visual narration of the Dacian wars. These forms had been a common heritage of the Roman artists for a long time, with a complex story of recoveries and adaptations. The analysis of a case of peculiar interest constitutes a further confirmation of how the inventors of the official iconographic programs, within the Roman artistic practice, used a formal code in which visual motifs of the past had already been assimilated and renewed.

Abstract

A field of research not yet investigated in all its potential, within the very rich literature about the Trajan’s Column, is an in-depth study of the iconographic schemes of Greek derivation poured into the visual narration of the Dacian wars. These forms had been a common heritage of the Roman artists for a long time, with a complex story of recoveries and adaptations. The analysis of a case of peculiar interest constitutes a further confirmation of how the inventors of the official iconographic programs, within the Roman artistic practice, used a formal code in which visual motifs of the past had already been assimilated and renewed.
