Abstract

In an early-twentieth century boarding school for "respectable" young ladies from Catania, girls used to exchange postcards written in French, even by hand. It has been found an album where the Writer's grandmother had kept about fifty postcards that she received. The postcards, which were watercoloured, in printed French writing and with comments in Italian or French, are published here for the first time. It is about a series of postcards (some of them are complete, while others are not), accompanied by headlines and page numbers, which give shape to often edifying stories. The importance of the disocvery is twofold: on the one hand, it testifies to the study of French in Sicily and, on the other hand, to the illustrative role of the young ladies' stories and comments as forms of representation of early-tweintieth century society.
