The narration of traumatic experiences and stressful events trying to explain their personal meanings, serves both to objectify one’ s own past experiences and to know oneself better, but it can also improve physical and mental health, personal efficiency and positively change the way of thinking, attitudes, behaviours and interpersonal relations. James Pennebaker has launched a line of experimental studies aimed at clarifying the effects of expressive writing and psychophysiological mechanisms which trigger when trauma and stressful experiences are translated into words. Narrative thinking is the theoretical perspective which founds this research method. It considers personal identity as a «text» in construction. Appreciable results of psychological researches carried out so far suggest that the perspective use of expressive writing in the counseling could improve any transversal competences in the students who are attending the fifth year of high school and are preparing for their final exams.
