This book, conceived according to a multidisciplinary methodology, proposes to the attention of scholars new data for the knowledge of a painted panel from the last quarter of the 15th century coming to the Diocesan Museum of Palermo from the Cathedral; hitherto attributed to Riccardo Quartararo and identified as Saint Cecilia only because of the presence of the musician angel, the work is here correctly recognized, after restoration, as Saint Barbara because of the imposing tower behind it and attributed to the Neapolitan painter Cristoforo Faffeo on the basis not only of stylistic-formal similarities, but of technical-executive and scientific evidence in comparison with other works referred to the same and to Quartararo; finally, among the study hypotheses, the arrival of the painting in Palermo between the 18th and 19th centuries through an Italian-southern archbishop, such as Cardinal Ferdinando Maria Pignatelli (+1853), is proposed.
Il volume, concepito secondo una metodologia multidisciplinare, propone all'attenzione degli studiosi nuovi dati per la conoscenza di una tavola dipinta dell'ultimo quarto del XV secolo proveniente al Museo Diocesano di Palermo dalla Cattedrale; finora attribuita a Riccardo Quartararo e identificata come Santa Cecilia solo per la presenza dell'angelo musico, l'opera viene qui correttamente riconosciuta, dopo il restauro, come Santa Barbara per l'imponente torre retrostante e attribuita al pittore napoletano Cristoforo Faffeo sulla base non solo di analogie stilistico-formali, ma di evidenze tecnico-esecutive e scientifiche nel confronto con altre opere riferite allo stesso e al Quartararo; infine, tra le ipotesi di studio, viene proposto l'arrivo del dipinto a Palermo tra XVIII e XIX secolo tramite un arcivescovo italo-meridionale, come ad esempio il cardinale Ferdinando Maria Pignatelli (+1853).
