The contemporary city poses a question about regeneration which increasingly finds its answer within the open spaces, where values and potential are recognized not only in ecological and environmental terms but also in terms of agricultural production. However these areas may have consequences on global sustainability and local urban-welfare, provoking identification processes with the places and regenerating the local identities as the only guarantee of survival in a harmonic territory. The research hypothesis is that the coastal areas and peri-urban spaces could contribute substantially to society and sustainable urban development as well as having an impact on social, physical, environmental and economic territorial systems.

Abstract

The contemporary city poses a question about regeneration which increasingly finds its answer within the open spaces, where values and potential are recognized not only in ecological and environmental terms but also in terms of agricultural production. However these areas may have consequences on global sustainability and local urban-welfare, provoking identification processes with the places and regenerating the local identities as the only guarantee of survival in a harmonic territory. The research hypothesis is that the coastal areas and peri-urban spaces could contribute substantially to society and sustainable urban development as well as having an impact on social, physical, environmental and economic territorial systems.
