Palermo e l'eredità Arabo-normanna

The Arab-Norman monuments of Palermo and the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale are the most important creations of that culture, expression of a socio-cultural syncretism that between the 11th and the 12th centuries under Norman domination gave rise to a unique and extraordinary building patrimony. The elements that constitute the group are selected on the basis of their state of conservation (and this is an exceptional case where the buildings of the period are not so ruined as to become archaeology) and on particular variations of the "syncretic" style that each one has acquired.

La Palermo arabo-normanna mantiene viva la memoria di una città aperta, multietnica, riflesso e manifestazione di un sincretismo culturale che, nei secoli, l’ha resa unica e meritevole di essere custodita, valorizzata e riconosciuta come un autentico “gioiello”, patrimonio dell’umanità. Tra i monumenti arabo-normanni presenti, ne sono stati selezionati undici che preservano in modo pressoché integrale le componenti architettoniche e decorative e che si presentano in buono stato di conservazione. Si tratta infatti delle opere più rappresentative e artisticamente rilevanti nelle quali è possibile riconoscere inequivocabilmente i tratti salienti dell’arte arabo - normanna in tutte le sue mirabili componenti e sfaccettature.
