In Sicily, which is land of confrontation and encounter between cultures, are precisely the migration and mutation to present themselves as essential conditions for the construction of that synthesis expressed in the amazing cultural palimpsest offered by the mediterranean horizon. It is a synthesis absolutely original that, thanks to a listening attitude, has often made a treasure of the presence of sharp contrasts, and has recomposed them in an new unity. The "Mediterranean" places in Sicily, places of the paradox par excellence, live in these contrasts and show us their strength essential in revealing that particular circularity of time that permeates them, who has them structured in time and space and allows us to read, with continuity, the «newness of the identical», the perpetually temporary that is present in nature. In this deep-rooted cultural context - in what by many influential critics was defined as a true "school" of architecture - and, more importantly, around the coagulant figure of Pasquale Culotta has been developed in the last decades a work that has seen «… the practice of architectural design constructed on two fundamental areas of experience – the territory of Sicily and architectural experience throughout the world». This contemporary architecture, made by Sicilians in Sicily, founds most of his recognizability on the process put in place and within which it conforms itself. This is a process that develops proceeding on a work of “translation” in the architecture of the physical, social and cultural "material" of the place that can be assimilated to the practice of the transcription. In the architecture of the house, that for the inhabitants is the most direct translation of their habits of life, needs and of the most intimate aspirations, this transcription work is revealed with particular emphasis. Reflecting on the house, the transcription necessarily works around those core of persistence, which must be recognized and internalized so that we can consciously keep on a path already traced. Some of these cores are common to all the projects of the houses that we put beside this text: they can easily be related to that recomposition dialectic that has always been a fundamental and recurrent attitude in the sicilian architecture.

In Sicilia, terra di confronto e d’incontro tra culture, la migrazione e la mutazione si pongono come condizioni essenziali per la costruzione di quella sintesi espressa nello stupefacente palinsesto culturale offerto dall’orizzonte mediterraneo. Si tratta di una sintesi del tutto originale che, grazie all’attitudine all’ascolto, ha spesso fatto tesoro della compresenza di contrasti stridenti, ricomponendoli in inedite unità. I luoghi “mediterranei” di Sicilia, luoghi del paradosso per eccellenza, vivono di questi contrasti e ci mostrano la loro forza essenziale nel rivelare quella particolare circolarità temporale che li permea, che li ha strutturati nel tempo e nello spazio e che consente di leggere, con continuità, la «novità dell’identico», il perennemente provvisorio presente in natura. In tale radicato contesto culturale - all’interno di quella che da molti autorevoli critici è stata definita come una vera e propria “scuola” di architettura – e, soprattutto, attorno alla figura coagulante di Pasquale Culotta è stata sviluppata negli ultimi decenni un’opera di riflessione progettuale che ha visto la «... pratica del progetto di architettura, costruita su due fondamentali ambiti di esperienza: il territorio siciliano e quello dell’architettura universale». Questa architettura contemporanea, fatta da siciliani in Sicilia, fonda gran parte della propria riconoscibilità sul processo messo in atto e all’interno del quale essa si conforma. È un processo che si sviluppa procedendo su un’opera di “traduzione” in architettura dei “materiali” fisici, sociali e culturali del luogo che può essere assimilata alla pratica della trascrizione. Nell’architettura della casa, che per gli abitanti è la più diretta traduzione delle proprie consuetudini di vita, delle necessità e delle aspirazioni più intime, questo lavoro di trascrizione si rivela con particolare evidenza. Riflettendo sulla casa, la trascrizione opera necessariamente attorno a quei nuclei di permanenza, che devono essere riconosciuti e interiorizzati affinché si possa proseguire, consapevolmente, su un percorso già tracciato. Alcuni di questi nuclei accomunano i progetti delle case che affianchiamo a questo testo: essi possono essere facilmente riferiti a quella ricomposizione dialettica che, da sempre, è stata un’attitudine fondante e ricorrente nell’architettura siciliana.
