Dal rettifilo alla croce: l'apertura di strada Maqueda a Palermo

Till now the project of strada Maqueda has been subjected almost exclusively to critical interpretations that have properly emphasized its symbolic value, especially with reference to the showing, at an unprecedented urban scale, of the symbol of the cross, expression of a Catholicism increasingly orthodox and extremist; little has been said, on the other hand, on issues related to the process of material construction of this urban space, to the operations and procedures related to the opening by disembowelment, in the dense and compact structure of one of the main Mediterranean capitals, of a road long almost one kilometer and a half, and large more than 11 meters, a rettifilo that in the year 1600 represented on the European scene an extremely complex urban intervention. In this contribution, even with the aid of new archival documentation, I will try to shed light on the protagonists of this architectural achievement, on steps, timing and mode of organization of the construction site, as well as tools and techniques used to control the urban space in order to track properly the new road through the medieval neighborhoods.

Sino a questo momento la realizzazione della strada Maqueda è stato oggetto quasi esclusivamente di interpretazioni critiche che ne hanno correttamente sottolineato la valenza simbolica, soprattutto con riferimento alla ostentazione di quella croce espressione di un cattolicesimo fattosi sempre più ortodosso e oltranzista; poco si è detto, invece, sugli aspetti legati ai processi di costruzione materiale di questo spazio urbano, alle operazioni correlate all’apertura per sventramento, nel tessuto denso e compatto di una delle principali città mediterranee, di una arteria stradale lunga quasi 1 chilometro e mezzo e larga oltre 11 metri, un rettifilo che all’anno 1600 costituiva nel panorama europeo un intervento urbanistico di grande arditezza. In questo contributo, anche grazie all’ausilio di nuova documentazione d’archivio, si proverà a far luce sui protagonisti di questa impresa architettonica, su fasi, tempi e modalità di organizzazione del cantiere, nonché su strumenti e tecniche impiegate per il controllo dello spazio urbano al fine del corretto tracciamento del nuovo asse stradale sul costruito.
