Abstract

The healing power of memory in ‘Paradiso degli Alberti’ by Gherardi The weaving of the fabric of memory, including moments and recognizable figures of the past, and the development of an autobiographical discourse in a cognitive function are the vectors through which the narration of Paradiso degli Alberti moves. The notary from Prato conceives a work in which the perspective of memory has a dual function: both comfort to the existential loneliness of the writer - tied to the processes of political and cultural transformation taking place at the intersection between the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth - and the attractive mask of an innovative and polycentric project. Narrative of the self and learned confabulations, plurality of voices of the characters and the narrator’s voice, direct relationship with the world and meta-textual reflections, become elements of a pleasant communication. The author’s cultural heritage takes on meaning and value thanks to an autobiographical filter through which passions and thoughts are seen. Individual experiences and memories become the subject of a narrative fiction, ranging from comforting sublimation and identification of doubts, plumbed with the sharp eye of the reader of Petrarca and Boccaccio, and with humanist awareness of the emotional and metaphorical meanings of writing.
