Val di Noto in Sicily is the geographical area with most attention to stereotomy and with centuries-old tradition in stone carving. In the ancient city of Noto one can note, and partially verify verify-from archival documents and manuscripts, and also through the discovery of complex architectural elements in stone found in recent excavations , that probably as early as the second half of the fifteen century, elements as cross-vaults “de arista”, spiral columns, staircases of the type “vis the Saint-Gilles had been constructed.
