The research examines the reason why according to modern museum-designers, who deal with the remains of ancient Greece, Periegesis represents an unavoidable call, that almost automatically springs, every time one has to plan a museum display whose subject are res antiquae. In our opinion, Pausanias, πεπαιδευμένος (a learned man of his time), who guided generations of travellers, archaeologists, classical scholars, historians, geographers and men of letters, is the one who plays the main role in leading cultural choices of museologists and museographists when they display site-museums in Greece. In the thesis, by examining the displays of case studies, we have discovered a kind of “contemporary museographic key”, taking place against the background of multiform ancient Greece, as a museografically oriented reading of Pausanias’ text reveals, that has identified some links able not only to connect, diachronically, artistic remains and architectonic monuments, observed (through his famous “autoptic” vision) and told in the 2nd century AD, with the museum displays planned in the XXIst century, but also to connect, synchronically and conceptually, the latter between themselves. In other words, it means that Pausanias’ detailed description of Hellas has helped to mould, in a fundamental way, the idea of Greekness (or Ellénikon) and it has oriented, in a meaningful way, not only conceptual and executive strategies but also the connected means of information concerning classical Greek culture, used by the modern museography. After all, the research reveals the importance for all the museums of allowing extinct peoples to speak through the voice of their time that can be more convincing and more involving than all the other means of information, if we listen carefully and use the best ways of communication.
La ricerca si interroga sul perché per i moderni allestitori, che si relazionano con le vestigia classiche greche, la Periegesi costituisca un richiamo ineludibile, che scatta, quasi in automatico, ogniqualvolta c’è da pensare a un’esposizione museale che abbia come oggetto le res antiquae. In effetti Pausania, vero πεπαιδευμένος, uomo colto del proprio tempo, che ha guidato intere generazioni di viaggiatori, archeologi, classicisti, storici, geografi e letterati, è stato da noi individuato come colui il quale gioca un ruolo determinante nelle scelte culturali di museologi e museografi per gli allestimenti dei site-museum in Grecia. La tesi ha rintracciato, negli allestimenti dei casi-studio una sorta di chiave museografica contemporanea, che, collocandosi sullo sfondo delle molte anime della Grecia antica, così come emerge dalla lettura museograficamente orientata del testo pausanico, ha individuato dei links, capaci di collegare, diacronicamente, emergenze artistiche e monumenti architettonici osservati (attraverso la sua celebre visione autoptica) e raccontati nel sec. II d. C., con gli allestimenti museali progettati nel sec. XXI e, cosa altrettanto importante, di riconnettere, sincronicamente e concettualmente, quest’ultimi tra di loro. In altri termini, ciò significa che l’affresco dell’Ellade effettuato da Pausania ha contribuito a plasmare, in modo determinante, la stessa identità del concetto di Greekness (o di Ellénikon) ed ha orientato, in modo altrettanto pregnante, le strategie concettuali ed operative, nonché le relative modalità comunicazionali, riferite alla cultura greca classica, messe in atto nel campo della moderna museografia. In ultima analisi dalla ricerca emerge l’importanza che può avere in qualsiasi museo il fatto di consentire ai popoli scomparsi di parlare attraverso la voce del proprio tempo, la quale, se ben ascoltata e ben trasmessa, può essere più persuasiva e coinvolgente di qualsiasi altro apparato comunicativo che si possa mettere in atto.
