Città, intonaci, colore. Problematiche inerenti al restauro degli intonaci storici

In the passage of time, any place makes concrete its visual identity and space determines affective relationships with people. But what happens if the volumetric and material characteristics that define the character of the places are suddenly altered? What consequences are felt if the actual process of globalization involves the spread in every place of the same materials for architecture? And what effects will determine whether this process involves the historic districts? The volume aims to retrace the dynamics of the restoration of historic towns in Italy over the last forty years, that are completely altering the urban scene in the old and charming old districts. The geographical margins, however, tend to widen to assess even what has been done in some "historic districts" in other countries. Among the instruments proposed to intervene in the old centers the so called "color plan" is critically analyzed some places it was applied in. But there is an alternative to the color plan? Is it possible to restore the plastered surfaces without restoring the facades in an arbitrary manner? The concluding part of the essay deals with the discussion of the methods of conservation of architectural surfaces with the support of images from the restoration sites. A quality restoration can be assessed only in proportion to the amount of conserved matter, in the full respect of the historical stratifications.

Con il trascorrere del tempo ogni luogo rende concreta la propria identità visiva e lo spazio percepito come luogo partecipa alla determinazione di relazioni affettive con la gente. Ma cosa accade se le caratteristiche volumetriche e materiche che definiscono il carattere dei luoghi sono all’improvviso alterate? Quali conseguenze si avvertono se il processo di globalizzazione in atto comporta la diffusione in ogni luogo degli stessi materiali per l’architettura? E quali effetti si determinano se tale processo investe i centri storici? Il volume vuole ripercorrere le dinamiche del recupero dei centri storici in Italia negli ultimi quarant’anni, che stanno completamente alterando la scena urbana nei vecchi e affascinanti quartieri antichi. I margini geografici, però, tendono ad ampliarsi per valutare alcuni interventi compiuti anche nei “quartieri storici” di altri paesi. Tra gli strumenti proposti per intervenire nei centri antichi è preso in esame il “piano del colore” e se ne analizzano criticamente gli esiti su alcune delle località in cui è stato reso operativo. Ma esiste un’alternativa ai piani del colore? È possibile restaurare le superfici intonacate senza ripristinare le facciate in modo arbitrario? La parte conclusiva del saggio affronta la trattazione dei metodi di conservazione delle superfici architettoniche con il supporto delle immagini tratte dai cantieri di restauro. Un restauro di qualità si può valutare esclusivamente in proporzione alla quantità di materia conservata nel rigoroso e colto rispetto delle stratificazioni.
