In December 1920, the Holy Office placed Tommaso Gallarati Scotti’s *Vita di Antonio Fogazzaro* on the *Index of Prohibited Books*. The events following the book's condemnation prompted the Milanese writer to compose a sacred drama and entrust its production to Eleonora Duse, who had made a sensational return to the stage in May 1921 after twelve years of absence. In late spring 1921, Gallarati Scotti began sketching the subject matter for *Così sia*—the play in which Eleonora Duse would make her debut on January 12, 1922, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome—basing it on his own short story, "La Madonna della lagrima," which had appeared in the collection *Storie dell’amore sacro e dell’amore profano* (a book itself placed on the *Index* in 1912).
