In a global context characterised by extreme polarisation in public debate and the rise of disinformation and misinformation, as well as illiberal public spheres even within established democracies, refocusing on women’s rights and women’s political participation offers us the opportunity to observe the transformations currently taking place from a gender perspective. This volume begins with the earliest agreements on women’s rights and measures to combat gender-based discrimination; it reviews the data on women’s political participation and examines the obstacles, opportunities and contradictions in the age of social media platforms, reflecting on online feminisms and anti-feminisms and on forms of misogyny on the internet.
