Marking the fortieth anniversary of the publication of *La macchina della pittura* (*The Machine of Painting*) by Omar Calabrese, this volume offers a reflection on the notion of the **theoretical object**, a key concept in the semiotics of art and visual culture. Calabrese’s work represents one of the first systematic attempts to develop a semiotics of painting capable of integrating textual analysis and theoretical construction, treating works of art not merely as illustrations of interpretative models but as devices capable of generating theory in their own right. Building on the tradition established by Hubert Damisch, Louis Marin, and Omar Calabrese himself, the contributions collected here examine the genealogy, development, and heuristic potential of the theoretical object, exploring its methodological and interdisciplinary implications. The volume investigates the relationship between semiotics, iconology, and visual culture, focusing on the self-reflexivity of texts, enunciative devices, the construction of anachronic constellations, and the ways in which images, figures, and discursive configurations become privileged sites for theoretical elaboration. Alongside a critical reassessment of the legacy of *La macchina della pittura*, the volume broadens its scope beyond the field of painting, demonstrating how the concept of the theoretical object can be applied to a wide range of artistic and cultural practices, as well as to specific figures, motifs, dispositifs, and processes of signification. The essays collectively reaffirm the continuing relevance of Calabrese’s semiotic project and the enduring value of the theoretical object as a conceptual tool capable of bringing theory and analysis, history and topology, interpretation and discovery into productive dialogue, thereby contributing to the renewal of scholarship on the arts and the production of meaning.

Abstract
The essays collectively reaffirm the continuing relevance of Calabrese’s semiotic project and the enduring value of the theoretical object as a conceptual tool capable of bringing theory and analysis, history and topology, interpretation and discovery into productive dialogue, thereby contributing to the renewal of scholarship on the arts and the production of meaning.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
