Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim (c. 935-c. 973) occupies a highly significant position in tenth-century literature. Her oeuvre - comprising hagiographic poems, dramatic dialogues, and historical-encomiastic poems - reveals a number of particularly important thematic strands, most notably conversion and martyrdom. This volume offers a comprehensive examination of the various forms of conversion, repentance, and spiritual renewal that can be identified, distinguished, and analysed throughout Hrotsvitha’s opera omnia, with particular attention to the hagiographic poems Maria, Theophilus, Basilius, Dionysius, and Agnes. A single contribution is devoted to the first of the dramatic dialogues, Gallicanus, since these themes are largely absent - or at any rate not especially prominent - in the two historical-encomiastic poems, Gesta Ottonis and Primordia coenobii Gandeshemensis. Special consideration is also given to Theophilus and Basilius, which, alongside the theme of conversion, develop the motif of the “pact with the devil,” a narrative theme that enjoyed widespread circulation throughout both medieval and later literature.
