This miscellaneous volume brings together essays based on the papers presented at the doctoral conference "Reconstructing Memory: Multidisciplinary Pathways and Approaches". The event, which took place in Palermo from 2 to 4 April 2025, forms part of the activities of the Doctoral Programme in Cultural Heritage at the University of Palermo, within the Department of Culture and Society. Organised as a forum for dialogue amongst young scholars, the conference provided an opportunity for shared reflection on a broad and cross-cutting theme, spanning different disciplinary fields, research methodologies and chronological horizons: the reconstruction of memory as a cognitive, critical and interpretative practice within cultural heritage. The decision to place the notion of memory at the heart of the conference stems from the realisation that cultural heritage is not merely a collection of tangible and intangible artefacts to be preserved and promoted, but a complex system of traces, relationships and meanings that requires ongoing processes of analysis, interpretation and reconstruction. From this perspective, ‘reconstructing memory’ means examining what remains of the past in order to place it within a broader understanding of the societies that produced it, in the knowledge that even the most fragmentary or seemingly marginal accounts can contribute to the definition of layered cultural, social and identity-related contexts. In this sense, as Marc Bloch observed, engaging with sources always involves a process of critically examining the past and the contexts that gave rise to it (Bloch 1993, pp. 20–39). Sources, in fact, are not limited to written documentation, but comprise a diverse range of evidence (for example, archaeological, bio-anthropological, historical-artistic and monumental) that enables us to reconstruct practices, relationships, forms of representation and ways of organising space and collective life.
Il presente volume miscellaneo raccoglie i saggi elaborati a partire dalle relazioni presentate in occasione del Convegno dottorale "Ricostruire la memoria. Percorsi e approcci multidisciplinari".
