This doctoral research investigates the relationship between the protection and enhancement of archaeological heritage within museums and archaeological parks in western Sicily. The study is grounded in the premise that protection and enhancement should not be understood as opposing domains, but rather as distinct and interdependent dimensions that must be examined jointly from historical, institutional, and operational perspectives. Within this framework, the research focuses on two case studies: the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo-Marsala (Trapani) and the “Baldassarre Romano” Civic Museum of Termini Imerese (Palermo), selected for their different administrative configurations and institutional trajectories. The research adopts an interdisciplinary methodology combining the history of legislation and institutions, archival research, digital curation, oral history, and visitor studies. First, it reconstructs the historical and regulatory framework governing the protection of archaeological heritage in Sicily, from the Kingdom of Sicily to contemporary legislation, with particular attention to the evolution of the museum system and the role of civic museums within the Italian and regional administrative context. Second, the institutional histories of the two museums are analysed in relation to their present organisational structures and to the heritage enhancement strategies adopted.Another way of investigation concerns the reconstruction of administrative and scientific archives dispersed across multiple locations. These materials have been reorganised within the digital curation project ArchaeoArchive, which integrates archival documentation with oral history sources collected through interviews with scholars and professionals involved in the recent history of these institutions. The analysis of these sources has clarified the phases of discovery and musealisation of the Punic ship and the establishment of the Baglio Anselmi Museum in Marsala, while also allowing a critical reassessment of the foundation of the Civic Museum of Termini Imerese. In the case of Marsala, the research included the administration of 200 visitor questionnaires and the analysis of visitor movement patterns through GPS tracking, enabling the identification of different audience profiles and the development of practical proposals, including the design of a digital audio guide on the izi.TRAVEL platform. For Termini Imerese, the study proposes strategies aimed at strengthening the museum’s identity and fostering its integration within the urban context.Overall, the research demonstrates that heritage enhancement cannot be regarded as a secondary phase subordinate to protection but should instead be understood as the outcome of historically grounded knowledge of institutions, documentary sources, and audience behaviour.
