If Akragas belongs to the fable of a golden age and to “legends that – as Walter Pater wrote about ancient cities – will not easily be forgotten, however prosaic the world may become,” Agrigento, with its layers and “re-writings”, today expresses the plurality of many contemporaneities: it is a city of numerous refoundings that contains many other cities, each of which time offers in different variations. Empedocles and Pirandello, books and artworks, urban structures and monuments – from the Greek era to the various historical periods the city on the "hill" has lived through, up to modern times – all bear witness to this. And yet, Akragas / Agrigento is an unified – and unique – space, even as it bears on its very body all the transformations and even the distortions caused by humans and by time: alongside the order of the ancient settlement and the beauty of the landscape in the Valley of the Temples – where the romantic bond between nature and architecture that has long captivated cultural history is renewed every day – there is the chaos of the current sprawling city, marked by incoherent and uncontrolled growth, real estate speculation, and bad governance. Agrigento is, then, both myth of the ancient and representation of modernity’s crisis – sacred ground and profaned place; and in a forward-looking sense, it remains an open field for knowledge (constantly available to new discoveries) and a territory that must use its contradictions as elements to open up new visions.
Se Akragas appartiene alla favola di una età dell’oro e a «leggende che – come scriveva Walter Pater a proposito delle città antiche – non saranno facilmente dimenticate, per prosaico che possa diventare il mondo», Agrigento con le sue stratificazioni e “ri-scritture” esprime oggi la pluralità di tante contemporaneità: è una città con numerose rifondazioni che contiene tante altre città delle quali il tempo offre differenti declinazioni. Di esse danno testimonianza Empedocle e Pirandello, libri e opere, assetti urbani e monumenti, dall’epoca greca ai vari periodi storici vissuti dalla città consolidatasi sulla “collina”, fino alla modernità. Eppure, Akragas / Agrigento è uno spazio unitario – e unico – anche se vive sul proprio corpo tutte le modificazioni e perfino le distorsioni causate dagli uomini e dal tempo: all’ordine dell’insediamento antico e alla bellezza del paesaggio della Valle dei Templi – in cui ogni giorno si rinnova il romantico legame tra natura e architettura che ha affascinato la cultura storica – affianca il caos dell’attuale città dispersa che mostra i segni della crescita incoerente e incontrollata, della speculazione edilizia e del mal governo. Agrigento è, allora, mito dell’antico e rappresentazione della crisi della modernità, suolo sacro e luogo profanato; prospetticamente resta campo aperto alla conoscenza (continuamente disponibile a nuove scoperte) e territorio che deve utilizzare le contraddizioni come elementi per aprire a nuove visioni.
