This study examines the social phenomenon of the sacred tattoo as a cultural and religious expression in which both individual and collective identities are manifested through the ritual of pilgrimage. Through a sociological analytical approach, the tattooed body is interpreted as a symbolic site of social meaning, memory, and spiritual transformation. Drawing on theories from the sociology of religion and cultural processes, this work investigates the role of the tattoo in constructing cultural and social belonging, highlighting its functions as an identity marker, rite of passage, and sacred inscription. Thus, in what ways does the sacred tattoo contribute to the construction and communication of individual and collective identity? To what extent is the ritual meaning of the sacred tattoo within pilgrimages at risk of being emptied or transformed by dynamics of religious tourism and cultural consumerism? Finally, what is the contemporary role of the sacred tattoo as an identity and/or ritual practice in the context of pilgrimage, situated between tradition and modernity? The tattoo, as an indelible mark on the skin, becomes a tool of communication and transformation, capable of reflecting the tensions between tradition and contemporaneity, globalization and local identity, social acceptance and secularization. To explore these themes, the research employs a multilayered qualitative analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on face-to-face interviews with tattoo artists—both specialists in sacred tattoos and those not exclusively focused on them—who offer a privileged perspective on the motivations, meanings, and transformations associated with these practices. Through their narratives, the study explores the internal dynamics of tattoo culture, its connections with pilgrimage, and the tensions between tradition and innovation. In parallel, data collection takes place through questionnaires administered to tattoo artists, pilgrims, and individuals bearing tattoos, complemented by life stories analyzed using NVivo software. This approach makes it possible to delve into the complexity of spiritual and religious identity narratives associated with the phenomenon of the “sacred tattooed body” – or “the sacred worn on the skin.” This plurality of methodological tools brings to light the complex dynamics that position the sacred tattoo as a central interpretative key for understanding contemporary processes of identity and spiritual construction.
