What are microaggressions? What consequences do microaggressive behaviors have on their targets? How deeply rooted are prejudices in our cultural systems and mental habits? How can we recognize and confront microaggressions? This volume – developed within the framework of the study initiatives of the “Laboratorio Corpi, Diritti, Conflitti” and the “Laboratorio di Servizio sociale” at the University of Palermo, and funded through university grants aimed at supporting research activities – seeks to provide concrete answers to these questions. It delves into the various dimensions of the concept of microaggressions, not only through a thorough review of the most established scientific literature but also by critically analyzing the most significant findings from empirical research. In particular, the research investigated the phenomena of direct and indirect discrimination, both perceived and experienced, within university contexts. The specific goal was to detect, through the direct testimonies of students from the University of Palermo, the presence of possible microaggressive phenomena and their effects on three target groups: LGBTQIA+ minorities, students with migrant backgrounds, and students with diverse abilities. The essays collected here offer a meaningful contribution to critical reflection on the rigidity of certain social constructs toward those labeled as "other."
