Abstract
In the panorama of dispersion that characterizes the island archives, the monastery of Santa Maria del Bosco in Calatamauro presents the peculiarity of the preservation of a rich tabularium kept in the diplomatic of the State Archives of Palermo. Its study, integrated with archival and manuscript sources, fragments of memory found in various Archives of the Peninsula, has made it possible to outline the history of the abbey, defining its patrimonial wealth and relationships with local powers. The transformations of the monastery in the continuous search for the growth of divine worship make the case of Santa Maria del Bosco emerge from the panorama of hermitages that arose in Sicily starting from the end of the 13th century. Benedictines, then Olivetans and, finally, Augustinians populated the abbey in six centuries marked by a close relationship with the secular powers of the area, but also marked by recurring disputes with the bishop of Agrigento obstinate in the attempt to impose his jurisdiction. A history that unravels between seigniorial and ecclesiastical powers, Crown and Papacy and that with incessant seigniorial and royal concessions and with countless donations from private individuals builds the grandeur of the monastery, given by a huge patrimony constituted with legacies from private individuals but increased thanks to the undisputed entrepreneurial and managerial ability of the monks.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
