Between the 13th and 15th centuries, notarial signa were not mere instruments of authentication but real symbols of professional and cultural identity. This volume, the result of in-depth studies, explores the forms, meanings and evolutions of these distinctive signs, placing them in the broader social and historical context of the Mediterranean. Through an interdisciplinary approach, combining history, philology, anthropology and art, the signa of Sicilian, Sardinian and Catalan notaries are analysed. Each contribution reveals how these distinctive signs of notaries reflect local specificities and, at the same time, show connections between different cultures in an era characterised by intense commercial, cultural and religious exchanges. The book offers a detailed insight into the role of notaries, who were not only technical figures but also protagonists of a complex cultural network, capable of adapting to the needs of their times. From simple monograms to more artistic elaborations, notary signs become a key to understanding the relationships between individuals, communities and institutions. A work that sheds light on a fundamental aspect of historical documentation, enhancing the cultural heritage of an often neglected tradition.
