in this book, I will argue for a fundamental ethical thesis, namely that abortion, from both a moral and legal perspective, could be freely permitted—erring on the side of caution—up to the twentieth week of pregnancy. This is because, based on current scientific data, there is sufficient empirical certainty that the fetus does not experience any pain up to that point. In the subsequent weeks, abortion should only be allowed if there is a risk to the woman's health or life, if there are severe fetal malformations that endanger the woman's mental health. To support this argument, I will analyze the concept of a person, following Parfit's theory and his reductionist thesis. According to this view, the existence of a person simply consists of sufficient physical or cerebral continuity (of a living brain, of course) or psychological continuity, as manifested in the occurrence of certain mental and physical events, or in the presence of specific psychological or physical connections.

Abstract

in this book, I will argue for a fundamental ethical thesis, namely that abortion, from both a moral and legal perspective, could be freely permitted—erring on the side of caution—up to the twentieth week of pregnancy.
