Nelle terre del gelso. Architettura del Cinquecento nel territorio del Val Demone, tra Messina e Palermo

The book analyses the architecture realised in the 16th century in a large area of the mountainous hinterland of north-eastern Sicily, the Val Demone, of which Messina was the main city. Economic and power plots, linked to the cultivation of mulberry trees and the production of raw silk, also generated strong relations with Palermo. In the 16th century, this production constituted the territory's main economic resource, the driving force behind interest in the area and a source of funding for the construction of a substantial architectural heritage. Little investigated by historiography, it offers interesting insights into the paths of the Renaissance from the coasts and main cities to the inland areas, facilitating understanding of the dynamics of the spread of classicism in a polycentric context characterised by rich cultural stratification.

Il volume analizza l’architettura realizzata nel XVI secolo in un ampio territorio dell’entroterra montuoso della Sicilia nord-orientale, il Val Demone, di cui Messina era la città principale. Trame economiche e di potere, legate alla coltivazione del gelso e alla produzione di seta grezza, hanno generato forti relazioni anche con Palermo. Tale produzione costituiva nel Cinquecento la principale risorsa economica del territorio, motore di un interesse verso lo stesso e fonte di finanziamento per la realizzazione di un consistente patrimonio architettonico. Poco indagato dalla storiografia, esso offre interessanti spunti di riflessione sui percorsi del rinascimento dalle coste e dalle città principali verso le aree interne, agevolando la comprensione delle dinamiche di diffusione del classicismo in un contesto policentrico e caratterizzato da una ricca stratificazione culturale.
