This volume presents the outcomes of a comprehensive inquiry on the student condition conducted by a group of students from the Department of Law of the University of Palermo, within the course of “Educational Methodology for Law.” The objective was to understand the reasons for a widespread malaise among youth in training, the causes of university dropout, and, finally, what teaching was best suited to increase knowledge. skills, creativity and critical capacity, while preserving the psychological well-being of the academic community as a whole. The main finding arrived at is the indissolubility of the link between emotional and cognitive dimensions and, more specifically, between loneliness and university failure. Those who fail to build a social network among peers - a third of respondents - are those who struggle the most in their studies, often reaching the point of dropping out. Thus, individualistic and transmissive teaching, still the prevailing practice in Italian universities, is rejected. But the survey also notes how more and more teachers are experimenting with innovative teaching practices that favor cooperation over competition and active participation in the construction of knowledge, thus contributing to the creation of an educational institution that is - consistently with the constitutional dictate - a training ground for democracy.
