Storia dell’Iraq moderno e contemporaneo

The objective of this volume is to present the story of modern and contemporary Iraq: from the post-Ottoman transition period up to an analysis of the causes and consequences of the 2003 invasion. This book was created on the basis of the consultation of a particularly varied type of sources: archive, documents and books in Arabic, secondary sources in English, Italian and French, interviews, periods of field research, collaborations with representatives of local universities. In this process of historical reconstruction there are many unresolved issues or questions that have only been partially answered. Other questions have only been partially posed, other points only fleetingly covered. In this sense, on many topics this work can represent a basis from which to start for in-depth further investigations. The declared aim was to simplify the overall historical picture without however simplifying its contents as a consequence: making it intelligible, without omitting its complexity. Presenting and managing the plurality of the Iraqi intellectual, political and social world and their evolution throughout history has been one of the greatest challenges.

L’obiettivo del presente volume è quello di presentare la storia dell’Iraq moderno e contemporaneo: dal periodo di transizione post-ottomano sino ad un’analisi delle cause e delle conseguenze dell’invasione del 2003. Questo libro è stato realizzato sulla base della consultazione di una tipologia di fonti particolarmente varia: fonti d’archivio, documenti e libri in lingua araba, fonti secondarie in inglese, italiano e francese, interviste, periodi di ricerca sul campo, collaborazioni con rappresentanti delle locali università. In questo percorso di ricostruzione storica sono molte le questioni irrisolte o le domande cui si è potuto solo parzialmente rispondere. Altri quesiti sono stati solo parzialmente posti, altri snodi solo fugacemente percorsi. In tal senso, su molti temi questo lavoro può rappresentare una base da cui partire per l’approfondimento di ulteriori indagini. Lo scopo dichiarato era quello di semplificare il quadro storico d’insieme senza tuttavia semplificarne come conseguenza i contenuti: renderlo intellegibile, senza ometterne la complessità. Presentare e gestire la pluralità del mondo intellettuale, politico e sociale iracheno e della loro evoluzione nel corso della storia è stata una delle più grandi sfide.
