La logica della guerra nella Grecia antica. Contenuti, forme, contraddizioni

Are wars inescapable? Studying their structural functioning (outbreak, dynamics, propaganda) and the role played by the theoretical-cultural lenses inherent in historical narratives - or journalistic ones, in the case of the immediate present - in making them conceived in one way or another (right, wrong, heroic, necessary, to be supported or not, caused by one side or another...), can help to answer the question in a non-obvious way. The investigation of the phenomenon of 'war' in ancient Greece is conducted here, on texts of various genres and from different periods, explicitly and transparently against the backdrop of the military violence that has been bloodying much of Ukrainian territory since the end of February 2022, or rather in the light of it. It is intended to be a useful tool for becoming aware of the continuity or discontinuity between the conceptual and rhetorical-argumentative categories with which we think about war today and those with which it was thought of in antiquity. In this way, it will be possible to realise whether, when we reason about war, we set out our reasoning on it with linguistic awareness: that is, whether we use language with a clear understanding of its presuppositions and implications, or whether we simply believe that it expresses the nature of things and reflects the reality of the facts, while perhaps we are only unconsciously participating in a rhetorical tradition that favours war rather than hindering it.

Le guerre sono ineluttabili? Studiare il loro funzionamento strutturale (scoppio, dinamiche, propaganda) e il ruolo giocato dalle lenti teorico-culturali insite nelle narrazioni storiche – o giornalistiche, nel caso dell’immediata attualità – nel farle concepire in un modo o in un altro (giuste, sbagliate, eroiche, necessarie, da sostenere o no, causate da una parte o da un’altra…), può aiutare a rispondere alla domanda in maniera non scontata. L’indagine del fenomeno «guerra» nella Grecia antica è qui condotta, su testi di vario genere e di diversi periodi, esplicitamente e trasparentemente sullo sfondo della violenza militare che dalla fine di febbraio 2022 insanguina gran parte del territorio ucraino, anzi alla luce di essa. Essa intende costituire uno strumento utile per prendere coscienza della continuità o discontinuità tra le categorie concettuali e retorico-argomentative con cui pensiamo il conflitto bellico oggi e quelle con cui esso era pensato nell’antichità. Sarà possibile in tal modo rendersi conto se, quando ragioniamo sulla guerra, impostiamo i ragionamenti su di essa ‘parlando le parole’ o ‘venendone parlati’: cioè se utilizziamo il linguaggio avendo chiari i suoi presupposti e le sue implicazioni oppure semplicemente credendo che esso esprima la natura delle cose e rispecchi la realtà dei fatti, mentre magari stiamo soltanto inconsapevolmente partecipando a una tradizione retorica che la guerra, anziché ostacolarla, la favorisce.
