The Merendino Costantino palace occupies, within the historic center of Palermo, a strategic position in the Castellammare district, given its immediate proximity to Vigliena square, also known as Quattro Canti or Sun Theatre. Built on the pre-existence of a primitive palatial nucleus, starting from the eighteenth century and on the initiative of the Merendino family, it was enlarged and improved in its distributive-functional and constructive characteristics, under the direction of the architect Andrea Gigante, taking those architectural identity characteristics closest to the consolidated layout of a typical palace of that century, also reflecting the admirable collaboration between the technical expertise of the great architects-engineers of the time and a vast category of specialized workers, who well mastered the rules of the art. Architecture and Technology thus overcame constructive challenges, earthquakes, the audacity of reconstruction and also the issue of technological and structural updating, which allowed for a necessary revision of knowledge. This process in the building's construction history reached its apex with the design contribution and construction supervision of the architect Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia, technician of the subsequent owners such as the Costantino family; this passing of the baton has proved decisive progress in consolidating previous certainties, but also in relaunching the construction phases towards new systems imported from other Countries, considered as "experimental and innovative" goals at the time, as well as implementing the already rich decorative apparatus and finishes (Spanish and French ones, for example). The result was a kaleidoscope of extremely interesting design opportunities that this book describes , using a detailed documentary research that returns entire chapters of architectural technology, construction and urban history, architectural design approaches, styles and cultures of Palermo in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, adding to the involved technicians and artists also the names of the lesser-known protagonists of the building site, as masons, carpenters, liming workers, blacksmiths, water masters, pavers and brick manufacturers, … . The volume describes the ownership history up to the XX century, with the passage of palace and its appurtenances to the Ferrara Ferranti family, tracing - from the beginning to the end - a detailed story spanning at least three centuries.
