In Sicily, during the Norman age (1060-1194), the progressive construction of a renewed political-institutional apparatus, which began with the conquest of the island, took place in parallel with the reconstitution of the diocesan districts, which had definitively disappeared following the centuries-long Muslim rule. This monograph contains the results of research conducted with the aim of analysing the surviving sources on Sicilian bishoprics as a whole, starting from the end of the 11th century up to the threshold of the dynastic change that marked the advent of the Swabian era. In spite of the unevenness of the available data, it emerges that in the course of little more than a century, the role played by the island's episcopal hierarchy was of absolute prominence in several respects. In addition to the officia connected to their role as pastors of the individual diocesan communities they were in charge of, archbishops and bishops also acted as qualified protagonists in dealing within the royal court with the main governmental affairs and the most delicate political-diplomatic issues that the domestic and international events of the time posed. Far from limiting themselves to playing a merely executive role, albeit at a very high level, especially from the second half of the 12th century, many prelates proved capable of contributing to determining the very policy of the Sicilian sovereigns, not infrequently with outcomes that were fundamental to the historical junctures of the entire Regnum. Among other things, the Sicily of the time was characterised by the multi-ethnic composition of its social fabric. The coexistence within the same territory of Latins, Graeci, Iudaei and Saracens constituted a phenomenon without equal in the panorama of the period. This volume, therefore, also focuses on examining the delicate balance in the interaction between bishops and heterogeneous religious communities, in an attempt to grasp the motivations and orientations of an ideological matrix that, as always happens, found a way to innervate itself in historical reality by means of one of the most congenial instruments: law.

Abstract
This volume, therefore, also focuses on examining the delicate balance in the interaction between bishops and heterogeneous religious communities, in an attempt to grasp the motivations and orientations of an ideological matrix that, as always happens, found a way to innervate itself in historical reality by means of one of the most congenial instruments: law.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
