The volume explores the study of Carlo Maratti's canvas with the Madonna del Rosario and saints located in the oratory of SS. Rosary in S. Zita of Palermo. The first essay summarizes the production of Maratti or marattesca present in Sicily by mentioning the most significant episodes and the main sector studies. The second contribution examines the commissioning of the company of the SS. Rosario reconstructing for the first time, through archival investigations, the social consistency of the association from the end of the sixteenth century. The text, therefore, links the commissioning of individual characters to the various historical-artistic productions of the oratory up to the whole of the eighteenth century and proposes local reference models for the decorative configuration of the oratory. In this context, scholars are offered an unprecedented reconstruction of the events that led to the assignment against Maratti, closely linking him to the stucco apparatus of Giacomo Serpotta and to a long-standing dispute between religious orders that competed for the image of the Patron of Palermo, S. Rosalia. Finally, the commission document in Maratti, forgotten for over sixty years and never mentioned by studies on the subject, is resumed, and some key passages are interpreted in relation to what emerged from archival research and primary sources. The third intervention reports the results of diagnostics and observations related to the restoration, placed in correlation with equivalent data from investigations conducted on other paintings by Maratti, which allows for new conclusions to be reached with the contribution of unpublished elements and innovative interpretations.
