In July 1825, the architect-draftsman Jean-Jacques Lequeu (Rouen 1757-Paris 1826) packed up most of his life's work at the drawing board and donated them to the King's Library (now the Bibliothèque Nationale de France) just a year before he died in his Paris flat at 33 rue Saint-Sauveur. From then on, the group of drawings that belonged to the Norman architect would form one of the most heterogeneous and richly varied collections in the département des estampes et de la photographie, where they are kept today. This unusual collection includes a number of manuscript volumes accompanied by masterfully watercoloured plates - such as those of Architecture Civile and Nouvelle Méthode - but also a series of sheets containing various projects that were never realised, portraits and sneering self-portraits, figures of the male and female sexes, maps and cartographies, drawings on entomology, botany and mechanics, a short treatise on etching technique, a diary on an alleged trip to Italy and a short essay on how to wash, dye and starch linen. A dizzying succession of themes that justify the proliferation of epithets attributed to Lequeu by historiographers over the years. The already complex graphic apparatus is accompanied by the author's biographical events, full of ambiguous phases and knots that have yet to be unravelled, further entangled by the spectre of Marcel Duchamp hovering over the designer's work, whom some see as the head of a pataphysical-surrealist conspiracy, aimed at fighting Le Corbusier's modernist ideas. Often hastily dismissed as the least famous of the architects in Kaufmanni's triad, Lequeu is no longer unknown, yet there are still many gaps to fill and just as many new ideas to offer in the study of this enigmatic figure. The book starts with these "fragments" of paper, ink and colour, tracing a path that delves into an infinitesimal part of the graphic heritage given to us by Lequeu, namely the Nouvelle Méthode appliquée aux principes élémentaires du dessin, tendant à perfectionner graphiquement le tracé de la tête de l'homme au moyen de diverses figures géométriques, a brief treatise on the drawing of the human head and its individual parts, dated 1792. The study is carried out using the tools of drawing and graphic analysis, which are considered more appropriate to fill certain interpretative gaps as well as to offer the renewed point of view that the investigation of Lequeu's work deserves. The graphic decomposition of the treatise tables, in parallel with the study of the manuscript, highlights the contrast between the bizarre uniqueness of the method and the profound, at times disarming and cumbersome, coherence of the geometrical constructions, giving Lequeu's work a respectable place alongside the most famous treatises. Perhaps it is the perturbing fascination of the dazzling lavis drawings that has been the main reason for the scholar's attention being diverted over the years. Lequeu's drawings have never before been closely analysed with the tools of the draughtsman.
