The intervention, included in the panel of the Conference dedicated to the monumental forms of political and cultural identities, proposed the analysis of some artistic decorations of monumental public building made in Sicily during the fascist regime, such as the pictorial cycle of the Palace of the Prefecture of Ragusa, the bas-reliefs of the Casa del Fascio in Messina and the mosaic of the Maritime Station of the same city. The institutional representation of the collective – the Conference’s main subject of interest – was considered in the light of traditional themes of fascist ideology, such as Labour, and by episodes related to the local context, such as Mussolini’s visits or mythicized historical moments of the island. In the group scenes represented, the tensions between the persistence of individual and regional stylistic intentions and the aesthetic codes of the regime, such as the stylization of the roman past or a certain stylistic rendering of the bodies, were also highlighted.

Abstract

La présentation s’inscrivait dans le dernier panel du Colloque, consacré aux formes monumentales des identités politiques et culturelles : étudiant certains grands décors de bâtiments publics construits en Sicile sous le régime fasciste (le cycle pictural du Palais de la Préfecture de Raguse, les bas-reliefs de la Casa del Fascio de Messine, ou la mosaïque de la salle d’embarquement de la gare maritime de la même ville), la représentation institutionnelle du collectif a été analysée à travers les thèmes traditionnels de l’idéologie fasciste (en particulier dans l’idée d’effort commun, pour le travail ou pour le combat). En outre, il a été montré de quelle manière le traitement d’événements comme les visites de Mussolini ou les épisodes du passé local mythifié permettaient aux artistes de proposer des « scènes de groupe » dans lesquelles se négociaient constamment les tensions entre d’un côté les codes esthétiques du régime (stylisation du passé romain et épure des corps), et de l’autre la persistance d’intentions stylistiques individuelles et régionales.
