Con Biglietto di andata. raccontare l'emigrazione verso Stati Uniti e Argentina

Among the countries that have known and still know a large-scale of migratory flows, the Italian example is almost unique in terms of intensity, duration and variety of places of destination, especially in the period between the last four decades of the Nineteenth and the Seventies of the 20th Century, when the phenomenon reached its climax. Among the transoceanic destinations, Italians preferred the United States and Argentina. Our migration has rewritten social history (a history of suffering but also a history of navigation, economy, as well as cultural) due to the strong influences that the Italians have exercised, beyond the Atlantic, on architecture, cinema, gastronomy, literature and music. Like any other emigration, even the Italian one was accompanied by a dense production of literary writings, on both sides of the ocean, which offer us the opportunity to read our history from another point of view.

Tra i paesi che hanno conosciuto, e tutt’ora conoscono, flussi migratori di grande portata, l’esempio italiano è quasi unico per intensità, durata e varietà dei luoghi di destinazione, soprattutto nel periodo compreso tra gli ultimi quattro decenni dell’Ottocento e gli anni Settanta del Novecento, quando il fenomeno ha toccato il suo apice. Fra le molte destinazioni, gli Stati Uniti e l’Argentina, sono stati tra le mete preferite dagli italiani. Si è trattato di una storia sociale, di una storia di sofferenze ma anche della storia della navigazione, dell’economica, così come di quella culturale, tout court, per le forti influenze che gli italiani hanno esercitato, oltreatlantico, sull’architettura, sul cinema, sulla gastronomia, sulla letteratura e sulla musica. Come ogni altra emigrazione, anche quella italiana è stata accompagnata da una fitta produzione di scritture letterarie vergate, di qua e di là dell’Oceano, dai protagonisti del fenomeno emigratorio che offrono la possibilità di leggere, da un altro punto di vista, la nostra storia.
