Figurazioni dell'amor patrio - Esuli, profughi e migranti nelle arti visive del Risorgimento

A symbolic figure strongly rooted in the imagery of the Risorgimento, the exile gives a human face to the fundamental values of patriotic discourse, such as the spirit of sacrifice and the sense of belonging to the national community. The topic of exile has long been the subject of historical, historical-literary and comparative studies, and has enjoyed considerable success in 19th-century visual culture. Here, for the first time, it is systematically examined thanks to the precise reconstruction of the genesis of works which, by virtue of their allusive nature, arouse the interest of patriotic circles. In addition to proposing a casuistry of the most recurrent motifs, the author interprets the images of exile in the light of the literary, political and pedagogical contexts of the Risorgimento, linking the great painting of history with other visual sources (popular prints, photographs, theatrical sets) and with the art-historical tradition that remains an expressive repertoire congenial to the creation of an emotional language universally intelligible.

Figura simbolica fortemente radicata nell’immaginario risorgimentale, l’esule conferisce un volto umano a valori fondativi del discorso patriottico, come lo spirito di sacrificio e il senso di appartenenza alla comunità nazionale. Da tempo oggetto di studi storici, storico-letterari e comparatistici, il tema dell’esilio conosce una notevole fortuna iconografica nell’Europa del XIX secolo, qui per la prima volta esaminata in maniera sistematica grazie alla ricostruzione puntuale della genesi di opere che in virtù della loro natura allusiva suscitano l’interesse degli ambienti patriottici. Oltre a proporre una casistica dei motivi più ricorrenti, l’autore interpreta le immagini dell’esilio alla luce dei contesti letterari, politici e pedagogici del Risorgimento, mettendo in relazione la grande pittura di storia con altre fonti visive (stampe popolari, fotografie, scenografie teatrali) e con la tradizione storico-artistica che rimane un repertorio espressivo congeniale alla creazione di un linguaggio emotivo universalmente comprensibile.
