Dynamics of Periphery. Atlas for Emerging Creative Resilient Habitats

How can dynamic factors and dynamic phenomena outside of metropolitan cores be displayed for debates about territorial futures? Dynamics of Periphery showcases emerging creative and resilient habitat futures to develop concepts for metropolitan, urban, and rural networks—with a perspective not on urban margins, but on new places of community. The atlas displays integrative processdesign, pro-active context-building, and conceptual narratives as accelerators of change and new concepts in urbanism. These new concepts combine bottom-up and participatory approaches, the use of territorial capital, and the qualities of liveable spaces to create processual and strategic innovations across scales and disciplines. Starting from architecture, urban design, and territorial planning, the book aims to explore interfaces between design and research that contribute towards dynamic roles of peripheries as accelerators of change towards sustainable territorial futures. Dynamics of Periphery is an issue being discussed internationally as a topic that is important for economically and socially critical situations. Both in Europe and as part of a global debate, integrative and balanced development of metropolitan peripheries and of areas outside of new metropolitan regions is being stressed in research, planning practice, and politics. In addition to offering a wide range of current research concepts and approaches, the atlas aims to point towards future research into integrative urbanism and territorial development with a multi-disciplinary and multi-actor focus. It builds on the shared experiences of many contributors in the national Italian research project Re-Cycle (2012–16, funded by MIUR), which was based on the exhibition Re-Cycle at MAXXI in Rome 2011, and it connects with a large range of national and European research projects realized by several contributors including Responsive City, Augmented City, SmartLand, Agri-Cultures/Agro-Cities, Rurbance, Regiobranding, Alpine Building Culture, etc.
