Abstract

According to Latin grammarians as Diomedes, Donatus et al., hic is pronomen praepositivum vel demonstrativum, is pronomen subiunctivum vel relativum. The maim object of this paper is to investigate into the meaning of the couples of adjectives, that should be referred to the position and the anaphoricity; Greek grammatical tradition is considered important especially with regards to the article that fails in Latin but whose treatment by Greek grammarians exerts a great influence on Latin reflection. Among the four adjectives, only demonstrativum has been entirely successful and is still preserved, whereas with relativum we now refer to another pronoun and with subiunctivum to a mood of the verb. The Author’s intention is to investigate into ancient grammar in order to reconstruct its internal structure and not to look for confirmations of more recent notions and concepts. What Latin grammarians maintain about nouns, pronouns and verbs is generally clear but the classification into groups is less evident because it is done on the ground of accidentia, so that the terminology is common to different parts of the speech.
