Galdós drammaturgo : frontiere e soglie nel suo percorso letterario

Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), considered the greatest disciple of Cervantes, is among the greatest Spanish storytellers. From the ocean island where he was born, he moved to Madrid for his university studies, but he left early to devote himself to literature, theater, music and painting. Of Madrid he becomes the most attentive observer and the most passionate singer. Galdós collects maturity and originality essentially the Spanish literary tradition, while he takes in the lessons of Balzac, of the Russian narrators and of Dickens, of which he translates the Pickwik papers. The dramatist Galdós reveals himself, like the novelist, an acute receiver and a daring experimenter. His theatrical production is wide and heterogeneous for themes and structures. This volume, trying to remedy a lack of studies on his dramatic work, traces the constant reception of the European theatrical renewal between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Dall’isola oceanica in cui nasce, si trasferisce a Madrid per gli studi universitari, che però lascia presto per dedicarsi alla letteratura, al teatro, alla musica e alla pittura. Di Madrid diventa il più attento osservatore e il più appassionato cantore. Galdós raccoglie con maturità e originalità essenzialmente la tradizione letteraria spagnola, mentre recepisce la lezione di Balzac, dei narratori russi e di Dickens, di cui traduce i Pickwik papers. Il Galdós drammaturgo si rivela, come il romanziere, un acuto ricettore e audace sperimentatore. La sua produzione teatrale si presenta ampia ed eterogenea per temi e strutture. Questo volume, cercando di sanare una carenza di studi sulla sua opera drammatica, ne rintraccia la costante ricezione del rinnovamento teatrale europeo tra il XIX e il XX secolo.
