La stazione ferroviaria e marittima di Angiolo Mazzoni a Messina

Since the late 1800s, the introduction of railway stations into Italian cities gave rise to powerful transformations. The organism of the station maintained a decisive role throughout the twentieth century and up to the present day, because it is required to evolve continuously on the basis of new technological breakthroughs and the changing needs of society. Today’s attention to the legacy of existing railroad structures is re& ected in the study of the design principles underlying the complex of the Stazione Marittima e Centrale in Messina, by Angiolo Mazzoni. The study highlights the design themes that focus on the relationship with the city and its planning rules. These design approaches also sought to address the landscape of the Strait, thereby structuring the body of the station not as a discontinuity or a barrier within the city but as a strategic urban node, which can regulate, order and suggest connections and relationships between the public spaces and the spaces of the infrastructure itself.

Fin dagli ultimi anni dell’Ottocento, l’inserimento delle stazioni ferroviarie all’interno delle città italiane, con il loro carattere tipologico nuovo e fortemente segnato dalle implicazioni tecnologiche, stimola una forte trasformazione e, in molti casi, modifica relazioni e impianti urbani consolidatati nel tempo. Lo sviluppo dei nuovi tracciati ferroviari sul territorio, con la conseguente necessità di cavalcavia, viadotti e gallerie, interferisce con i tessuti urbani esistenti e condiziona gli assetti del territorio nei suoi sviluppi futuri. L’organismo della stazione conserva un ruolo determinante, attraversando anche il Novecento, ! no ai nostri giorni, per questa sua necessità di continua evoluzione in relazione alle nuove conquiste tecnologiche ed alle variate necessità della società in relazione, soprattutto, al rinnovato ruolo che l’edificio della stazione è chiamato a svolgere in rapporto alle differenti necessità e dinamiche della città contemporanea.
