The results of an extensive experimental study on the time-dependent effects, and in particular on the creep, of calcareous bioclastic sands subjected to 1-D compression are reported and discussed in the paper. Tests have been carried out on dry sands reconstituted in the laboratory; the tested sands are obtained by sieving of natural sand. Tests on quartz and on pumice sands have been carried out for comparison. The secondary coefficient of compression C increases with the applied vertical effective stress v, if the latter is applied as an single load step. However, rippling of the C - applied stress curve have been observed within the investigated stress interval and especially up to values of v up to 15 MPa. This behavior is related to the phenomenon of the crushing. The results show that creep of sands is not related only to crushing of grains, but also to other deformation mechanisms such as the relative displacements of sand particles.
