At the base of this chapter is the belief that disciplinary-specific discus-sions on ethics can play an important role in furthering understanding and practice in relation to environmental planning, in order to improve its effi-cacy. The advantage of disciplinary-related discussions on ethics is that they may draw upon, and indeed help create and consolidate, a practice community, a community in which members share a sense of purpose in relation to a shared endeavour and a shared set of values: a sense of what kinds of things might and should count as good reasons for action. The chapter is also fuelled by a recent personal experience – a huge arson in the Madonie Regional Park – which has induced the author to think anew about the weight, relevance and importance of the sphere of ethics within the scope of environmental planning research and practice.
