During the last three decades Italy has become attractive to a growing flow of immigrates which determined a sudden change of its society.

Abstract

During the last three decades Italy has become attractive to a growing flow of immigrates which determined a sudden change of its society. Since the early Nineties of the last Century, some of these people have felt the need to tell the reality of immigration, choosing to do it through writing. The Italian language was the first obstacle to overcome, although they had, generally, a high degree of education. With respect to such difficulty, the cooperation between foreign and Italian writers, from which first works were born, seemed to be the most immediate and practical solution. After a brief period, some authors, in Italy since many years, decided to write directly in our language. If in a first period the themes of their works were strictly autobiographical, in a second step, writers presented themes related to stability, to everyday life, and to the return to their home Country, while recently, they have achieved, in many cases, a total creative freedom. If in the mid-eighties polls point to a general indifference (or ignorance) against the phenomenon of migration, in the mid-nineties they indicated widespread attitudes of repulsion, if not of real xenophobia. So, the works of these writers couldn’t no enjoy more the support of the big publishing houses, but they survived thanks to voluntary and non- governamental organizations, small publishers and independent magazines. Women's contribution to the growth of this literary movement is crucial. It is a rich and varied world which represents the 46% of the total surveyed, while in Italy the proportion of women writers is around 23%. This literature allows us to see with new eyes some of the aspects of our society that, sometimes, the Italians are no longer able to read. The works describe today's Italy, capturing its innermost soul, maybe sometimes unpleasant for an Italian reader, but full of surprising sociological values.
