VOLONTÀ GOVERNATIVE E POTERI LOCALI NEL RINNOVAMENTO URBANO DI PALERMO TRA XVI E XVII SECOLO

Printed sources and long-established historiography have attributed the merit of the extraordinary urban renovations of Palermo between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the viceroys in power at the time of opening the various construction sites. On the contrary, more recent studies have gradually brought to the light a relationship between royal representatives and local urban enterprises that was all but direct. Indeed, a problematic, complex and often confrontational decision-making process has emerged, revealing contrasting interests, roles and expectations between government policy and local power groups, organised into municipal bodies and corporations. The proposed contribution aims to provide a new understanding of this difficult relationship, by focusing on their respective interests and their repercussions on road and infrastructure modernisation projects, which, at the present state of research, are still a fertile field of analytical investigation and, for the profound reasons that determined them, an open historiographical problem.

È noto come le fonti a stampa e la storiografia più datata abbiano ricondotto il merito dello straordinario processo di rinnovamento urbano che interessò Palermo tra Cinque e Seicento ai viceré governanti. I più recenti studi, al contrario, stanno progressivamente mettendo in luce un rapporto tra i rappresentanti della monarchia e le imprese urbane tutt’altro che lineare. Emerge infatti un problematico, complesso e in molti casi conflittuale processo decisionale nel quale si misurarono interessi, ruoli e aspettative diverse tra la politica governativa e i gruppi di potere locali, organizzati in organi municipali e in corporazioni. Il contributo proposto mira a svolgere una rinnovata lettura di questo difficile rapporto, prendendo le mosse dalla focalizzazione dei rispettivi interessi e le loro ricadute nei progetti di modernizzazione viaria e infrastrutturale che, allo stato attuale degli studi, costituiscono ancora un fertile campo di approfondimento analitico e, nelle profonde ragioni che le determinarono, un problema storiografico aperto.
