We present a new manuscript anthology of Sicilian canzuni now preserved in Catania in a private collection and dating back to around 1600. It contains a large section of more than fifty 'ottave' attributed to various authors, alongside 349 mostly anonymous 'canzuni'. The manuscript was given by a certain Lelio, presumably Lelio Pavese (ob. 1608), to Paolo Pozzobonelli (1572-1630), both cultivated noblemen from Savona. The last section of the manuscript contains the transcription of a valuable series of twenty-two octaves of praise and imprisonment attributed to Antonio Veneziano (1543-1593) and addressed to Francesco Santapau, prince of Butera, between 1588 and 1590. We present a commented edition of them, arguing that the attribution is to be considered reliable on the grounds of historical and philological evidence.
